Haidas win scholarships

Two young Haida artists have just won $5,000 scholarships from the YVR Art Foundation.Juanita Ens, who works in jewellery with mentor Jay Simeon and Cori Savard, who carves with mentor Reg Davidson won the scholarships, the foundation announced last week."By helping (these) young artists study and improve, we are hoping their work will someday be part of the world-class collection here at YVR (Vancouver airport)," said Clive Grout, chair, YVR Art Foundation.The foundation has also awarded the $5,000 Frank O'Neill Visionary Award to Allan Keshane Weir a carver from Old Massett. The award is to provide support, training and recognition to aboriginal youth showing exceptional aptitudes in the arts, community service or aviation.
