Halibut fishery finished for season

Recreational fishermen won't be allowed to catch halibut from now until the end of the year.Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced the halibut closure last week, saying that the recreational catch this year has already exceeded its allowable amount. The closure takes effect at one minute past midnight Oct. 31 and continues until Dec. 31.The department says that while in-season closures like this one are unusual they are sometimes required."The department will be reviewing catch figures and fishing patterns in preparation for consultation on a pre-season management plan for the 2009 halibut fishery," the notice reads.
