"Hire local" says Port council

"Hire local" was the comment from Port Clements council, as it considered a request for support from the Misty Isles Economic Development Society at its Tuesday meeting (Ag. 3).MIEDS is applying for $16,550 from the Gwaii Trust for a $33,100 project (the rest of the money is coming from Tourism BC) to market and advertise Haida Gwaii. The letter from project coordinator Jenn Dolen explained that the money will be used to produce several short high definition video productions about the resources and services on the islands, to create media kits with information and story ideas for travel writers, and to buy more than 200 photos of the islands that could be used for tourism purposes. The money would also buy ads in tourism magazines.Council members had a few questions about the proposal, with mayor Cory Delves wondering why, for example, new video is needed when a DVD about Haida Gwaii produced by local filmmakers Josina Davis and Berry Wijdeven already exists. Council eventually voted to write a letter of support for the project, with the comment that local photographers and filmmakers should be used.
