HlGaa k'aats'ii Iihllnga - Agate Man Mini Triathlon

submitted by Peter Lake--The Agate Man Mini Triathlon was resurrected for the first time since 1996 on the Monday of the long weekend. It had been previously held once in the '80s and then in 1993 through 1996 and consisted of a 500 m swim in Pure Lake followed by a 20 km bike ride to Masset and a 6 km run around the Delkatla Sanctuary. The weather, which had been warm and sunny all week was, happily, cooler for the actual race, and winds were calm. The 54 entrants were the second most ever for this event and for the first time there were more solo entrants than relay entrants. Steve Querengesser won the over-all in a time of 1:11:19 while Bruce Haralson now of Estevan, SK, who led after the swim and bike, placed second in 1:19:36. He was closely followed by Ryan Barber in third. The first woman was Emily Ertel from Kelowna in a time of 1:21:04, followed by Angela Gross and Marika LaGasse. Emily's family also from Kelowna entered the non-competitive "Family Fun Relay" as well. as they'd brought only two road bikes. The "Narwhals", complete with tusks , were the first relay team to cross in 1:22:38. They were Lisa Froese, Kelly Miller, and Jen Chow, all nurses from the North Haida Gwaii hospital. Special mention should be made of Carrie Carty, who'd been feted by the Observer as a 13 year old sensation in the 1994 race and returned to action this year on a borrowed bike, and to 4 year old Clara Lake who completed almost the entire cycling portion pedaling a "Trail-a-Bike" behind her proud dad. There was also a controversial 'tie' in the hastily arranged "Couple's Challenge Category" between Harmonie Rose and Kazimir Falconbridge from Port Clements. Harmonie deserves special mention as well for competing after having delivered baby Sequoia within the last month. Thanks go to our sponsors (who appear on the t-shirts) and volunteers and to Lucy Neville of Haida Gwaii Recreation commission. Plans are underway for next year, possibly involving age categories.Sponsors include Langara Fishing Adventures, Delmas Co-op, Northern Savings, TLC Automotive, North Beach Surf Shop, Charter's Restaurant, P. Lake and A. Wilhelm MDs, Haida Gwaii Discovery Tours, and Masset Grocery. Thanks to Jags Brown, Terry Mitchell and Christine Carty for the photos.
