Honey Bee day proclaimed in Port

Port Clements has once again declared May 29 the "Day of the Honey Bee" after reading an appeal from a Saskatchewan resident who says the insects are dying at catastrophic rates.Clinton Shane Ekdahl said most people don't realize that honey bees are responsible for a third of the food we eat and for most of our food crop pollination. If honey bees became extinct, our food chain would collapse along with our economy and the environment, he said.Port councillors voted unanimously to proclaim May 29 in recognition of the honey bee, but decided not to follow up on Mr. Ekdahl's other suggestions, which included lobbying the provincial and federal governments, saying they didn't want to create extra work for their administrator.
