Information on Haida teachers being compiled

Haida Gwaii Teachers' Association aboriginal education chair Maureen LaGroix wants to know why there aren't more Haida teachers working on the islands.Ms LaGroix told the school board Tuesday night (June 23) that she is surveying teachers of Haida descent throughout the province to find out what challenges might be preventing them from seeking or getting jobs here."Employment equity is very important," Ms LaGroix told trustees. "How come they're not here?"Ms LaGroix's survey asks teachers about their educational background, their current position, their teaching history, and whether they have applied for teaching jobs in this school district. It also asks their opinion on the top three challenges facing aboriginal people in the education field.Once she has received all the responses, Ms LaGroix said she will be compiling the information and sharing it with the board.
