Islanders drop off tons of old electronics

Islanders got rid of almost 15 skids of old electronics during a one-day collection opportunity last Saturday (Sept. 26).Regional district deputy administrator John Farrell said the event was extremely successful, with islanders bringing in loads of old TVs, computer monitors, hard drives, keyboards, fax machines and other pieces of defunct equipment to drop-offs in Masset and Queen Charlotte. In Queen Charlotte, recycling company Encorp was planning to open drop-off event at 9 am, but opened an hour earlier because people were already lining up with their old electronics, Mr. Farrell said.Encorp will extract precious metals from the electronics for recycling, he said, and can also have the plastic shells ground up to make things like milk jugs.
