Islands now united against Enbridge

The communities of Haida Gwaii are now unified in their opposition to Enbridge's proposed pipeline, following Port Clements council's decision Monday (June 21) to take a stand against the project.Council members had been waiting to hear from Enbridge before making a decision, having invited the company three months ago to present its side of the issue, but at Monday's meeting they decided they'd waited long enough. The latest from the company was that a representative might be able to make a presentation June 28."I think we've given these gentlemen plenty of time," said councillor Stephen Foster, adding there was no guarantee they'd show up by the end of June. "I honestly don't think they really care what we do."Councillor Cam Traplin first made a motion that council wait until June 28 to make a decision, but this was defeated by the other two councillors attending the meeting, Mr. Foster and Greg Stewart (mayor Cory Delves and councillor Wally Cheer were both away).Mr. Foster then made a motion that Port oppose the project, which passed unanimously. The motion reads: "That the village of Port Clements stands unified with the rest of Haida Gwaii against the proposed Enbridge Gateway project introducing tankers to the waters around Haida Gwaii, thus creating the potential of risk to our communities and habitat."The other communities on the islands have all passed similar motions. The issue will be discussed again when islands community leaders gather at the June 24 protocol meeting in Queen Charlotte.Port's decision was greeted with enthusiasm by Enbridge Awareness Group member Kris Olsen of Queen Charlotte. "This is so good," he said. "We have an all-island stance now."Enbridge's proposed pipeline would allow transport of tar sands oil from Alberta to Kitimat, to be loaded onto supertankers and shipped to Asian markets at the rate of 225 supertankers a year. Islands' communities concerns have focused on the risk of an oil spill in north coast waters, although there is also concern about the tar sands generally and the pipeline itself.
