Islands second traffic light in the works

The RCMP is supporting efforts to get a traffic light at the intersection of Highway 16 and the Gwaii Co-op parking lot in Skidegate.
Sgt. Eric Stubbs of the Queen Charlotte detachment said the Skidegate Band Council is asking the Ministry of Transportation to put up a traffic light in the busy location, and that the RCMP fully supports the request.
The intersection has seen several accidents, including one last Wednesday night (Aug. 13). There were minor injuries and damage to two vehicles after a vehicle turning onto Highway 16 from Second Avenue was hit by a vehicle travelling along Highway 16, Sgt. Stubbs said. The stop sign by the Skidegate fire hall was also knocked over.
No charges will be laid as a result of the accident, he said. However, he warned that it is a heavy traffic area, one of the busiest intersections in Skidegate, and that drivers should be careful to observe the 50 kilometre per hour speed limit.
The islands first-and so far only-traffic light is in Skidegate Landing.
