Keeping doctors may be easier

Masset and Queen Charlotte may soon find it easier to attract and keep doctors, thanks to a program just announced by Victoria.
"For the first time, the provincial government has taken a comprehensive, co-ordinated and strategic approach to rural doctor issues," said health services minister Colin Hansen in making the announcement. He is promising a province-wide $58-million package of benefits attract rural doctors, which includes recruitment bonuses up to $10,000, extra money for staying, continuing education benefits and a general practitioner locum program.
Under the new program, a doctor working for example in Smithers would be paid $210,000 per year, up from $181,000 in the past.
The Northern Health Authority, responsible for health care facilities on the islands, is pleased with the new deal, according to a press release from CEO Malcolm Maxwell.
