Kids invited to the Fall Fair

Submitted by Sandra Price for the Fall Fair Committee-The Aug. 3 Fall Fair in Tlell has something for everyone, whatever your age or interest. But certain activities are designed especially for children and youth 18 years and under.
First is the entertainment. Etchi and Friends from Masset will hold forth from the stage and grounds with songs, puppetry and special activities. They'll help kids tie-dye t-shirts and join a parade. The 4-H will have a fish pond and a petting zoo.
Watch for the tide pool - but be careful you don't bump into the giant fish. Remember, this year's theme is "The River Runs Through." If you dress in costume, you'll be eligible for the $100 prize.
Two exhibition classes are open only to younger people. "Children" (up to the age of 12) has 14 categories of entries ranging from art and poetry to lego sculpture and cookies. "Youth" (ages 13 to 18) invites entries in drawing and woodwork, photography and computer art, as well as 11 other categories. So pick up a catalogue (see Observer community columns for locations) for all the details.
Entries must be brought to the fairgrounds in Tlell between 3 pm and 6 pm on Saturday, Aug. 2, the day before the fair. No late entries will be accepted. (If you live in Masset, Pat Parish will deliver entries brought to her at 1860 Harrison by Saturday noon.)
Special prizes will be awarded to one child and one youth in the veggie sculpture challenge. Create a sculpture using only vegetables, but you don't have to grow them yourselves. The winners will be chosen by popular vote of all fair-goers.
Speaking of veggies, wait till you see the food booths! There'll be hamburgers, freezies, ice cream and cotton candy. (Tell your moms, chowders and salads, too.) This might be your first chance to try oyster burgers, and you know how good salmon is.
Admission to the fair is free if you're 12 and under. Everyone else pays $5. This entitles you to all the entertainment, displays and a chance to vote for your favourite in all the challenges: decorated cake, transformed gumboot, chickens, flower arrangement, booth and, of course, veggie sculptures.
Admission also gives you the chance to win one of the gate prizes generously donated by islands businesses. A perennial favorite is the wheelbarrow filled with fresh veggies. The wheelbarrow donor (mis-identified in last week's paper) is Delmas Coop.
Join your parents in the work party this Sunday at noon. Help rake, sweep and tack up posters, then enjoy a hamburger barbecue. Bring a salad (veggie?) or dessert for potluck.
