Let's improve salvage logging, says Belsey

MLA Bill Belsey wants to hear from anyone on the islands who has ideas about how the small-scale salvage logging program could be improved.
He's been appointed to a committee which will be reporting to the Forests Minister about how to change the program. The provincial government promised changes as part of its forest revitalization plan, but it hasn't yet decided exactly how to go about it.
"The idea is to listen to those that work within the small scale salvage program," Mr. Belsey said. "They need to make it work better."
The North Coast MLA said he has heard complaints in the past from a couple of islanders about the salvage program. Their concerns range from high stumpage rates to the fact that there's no incentive for major licence holders to allow salvagers on their tenure.
Mr. Belsey will be here on the islands May 21 and 22, and is holding meetings in Sandspit, Queen Charlotte, Port Clements and Masset. He said he'll start each meeting with a 15-minute presentation, then his ears will be open to hear islanders' opinions.
For more information about the time of the meetings, see Mr. Belsey's ad in this Observer.
