Logger Sports Day set

Sandspit's Logger Sports Day celebration will be held on July 21 this year, even though the date conflicts with the Skidegate Days event, community members decided Thursday night (March 8).Betsy Cranmer, one of the Logger Sports Day organizers, told the Moresby Island Management Committee that she wanted to hold the celebration on another weekend, because lots of Sandspit residents enjoy attending Skidegate Days. But there was pressure from a local group that is planning a Sandspit reunion for the July 21 weekend and would like to see Logger Sports Day coincide with that event. The group has invited 300 former residents back to Sandspit, and about 80 have already made firm plans, she said.Management committee member Heron Wier said that is a significant number of visitors for Sandspit and they should be accommodated. He suggested that the organizers talk to Skidegate about coordinating the two events, for example holding dances on different nights.Ms Cranmer noted that Skidegate Days takes place over four days while Logger Sports Day takes about five hours, so there should be room to coordinate schedules. After some discussion, the management committee voted to hold Logger Sports Day July 21, and also to apply for Gwaii Trust funding for the event.
