Margie Colcol Bursary winners announced

submitted by Jenny White-The Hospital Day Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's Margie Colcol Bursaries. After some additional funding become available, the Hospital Day Committee was pleased to be able to offer three $1,500 bursaries to local candidates pursuing a course of study in the health care field.. Shannon Greenwood from Masset has lived on Haida Gwaii for 16 years and has been actively involved in the improvement of maternity services here. She is a licensed emergency medical responder and is employed with BC Ambulance. In September she will begin her Bachelor of Midwifery Program at UBC in Vancouver. Shannon has been awarded a $1,500 bursary.. Dana Myshrall from Queen Charlotte is entering her fourth year of nursing at the University of Northern British Columbia and has been awarded a $1,500 bursary. Dana is working this summer as a student nurse at the Queen Charlotte Hospital.. Leah Young from Queen Charlotte has completed one year at the College of New Caledonia and is working on a Medical Laboratory Technology Science Diploma. Leah spent two weeks this summer doing a two week intersession the Queen Charlotte Laboratory. Leah has been awarded a $1,500 bursary. Many individuals have made personal commitments to serve the health needs of our island community. Margie Colcol was one such nurse. She served this community for many years until her premature death from cancer in March, 1999. The Margie Colcol Bursary, named in her memory, honours not only this exceptional nurse but her example that is evident today in the nursing, medical and support staff that serve the Haida Gwaii communities.A call for applications for these bursaries happens each year around May or June.
