Masset is protesting against the Department of Fisheries and Oceans decision to shut down its fog horns along the west coast of Vancouver Island and BC's central coast.
Council members decided Monday (Dec. 2) to write a letter opposing the plan after reading a note from the Coastal Community Network, which said turning off the fog horns could make coastal waters less safe for kayakers, fishermen, recreational boaters and aviators.
Councillor Lorrie Joron suggested that council ask for more information from the Coast Guard, because she understood there was little need for the fog horns now that most boats are equipped with GPS.
But councillor Rollie Wheeler pointed out that GPS can malfunction, and mayor Barry Pages said no one from the government had consulted with coastal communities about the plan.
"My motion is we support this letter at this time," said councillor Janet Brown. "If we find out at a later date that it's good to get rid of the fog horns, fine."
Council members all voted in favour of writing in support of the Coastal Community Network, opposing the plan to shut off the fog horns.
