Minister visits, holds meetings

Minister of Forests Pat Bell was on the islands for the long weekend, accompanied by his wife.He came was to celebrate his 32nd wedding anniversary, said Ministry of Forests district manager Len Munt, but he was also here to connect with the Forest service team, small business owners, the Haida Nation and the Misty Islands Economic Development Society.No cheques were handed out, nor agreements signed, but many great conversations were held, said Mr. Munt. He said these conversations are important for the new relationships being established on the islands.Minister Bell met with Forest service staff at a barbeque at the new Moresby Camp facility on Moresby Island and, on a separate occasion, with staff at O'Brien and Fuerst Logging Ltd.Mr. Munt said Minister Bell also looked at issues in relation to the Islands' fishing lodges.According to MIEDS executive director Travis Glasman, the minister met with MIEDS board members Sunday night. Mr. Glasman said, "everything's moving quite slowly," in reference to the 80,000 cubic metre community forest tenure offered to the Islands communities. He said part of the delay is waiting for the overall annual allowable cut calculations to be finalized.Meanwhile MIEDS is working with the Council of the Haida Nation on a unified management for the community forest and the CHN tenure.
