The Council of the Haida Nation has appointed Brad Setso as the new chair of the Gwaii Trust Society. Mr. Setso will be attending his first public Gwaii Trust meeting Saturday morning in Queen Charlotte, said administrator Errol Winter. Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, which starts at 10 am in the Eric Ross Room in the Queen Charlotte community hall. Mr. Setso has previous experience representing Old Massett on the Gwaii Trust board. He replaces Peter Lantin, who was elected president of the Council of the Haida Nation late last year, just as his three-year term as Gwaii Trust chair ended. The Gwaii Trust Society is made up of eight directors representing all the islands’ communities, plus a chair. The society controls a multi-million dollar trust fund and hands out grants – ranging from a couple of hundred dollars to more than a million dollars – to individuals, organizations and communities through a variety of programs.
