New trustee to speak for parents

The new school trustee for Old Massett says he was motivated to run for the position because he wants to bring forward the concerns of parents and other community members.Warren Wesley said he has been involved in the parents advisory council at Tahayghen, and is looking forward to learning the new skills that the trustee position will require."It might be outside my comfort zone a little bit," he said, "but I'm taking this as a good challenge to see if I can do anything for the kids here."Mr. Wesley, who works as a parks facility operator for the Old Massett village council, said he has concerns about how special needs students are evaluated and wants to make sure all children are getting the help they need. He said he's also concerned about policies that aren't being enforced consistently, and about cell phones and other electronics in the classrooms. He has a son going into grade 8 here, and also has experience dealing with other school systems, having lived in Abbottsford and Prince Rupert as well as Old Massett. The next school board meeting will be held Sept. 28 at G.M. Dawson Secondary school in Masset.
