No injuries, no tsunami after earthquake near Port Alice

An earthquake magnitude 6.4 occurred during the lunch hour near Port Alice on Vancouver Island.No one was injured and there are no reports of damage to property as of mid-afternoon, and no tsumani was generated.The quake happened at 12:41 pm, about 50 km south of Port Alice, about 18 kilometres under the earth.Officials say quake of this size happens about once every ten years. The last one, a 6.6 magnitude, occurred in 2004, very close to where this one happened.Health officials on Vancouver Island say no one was injured and there are no reports of damage in Zeballos, the community closest to the quake.Provincial emergency officials expect to stand down from alert status Friday afternoon, unless there are reports from the area indicating an elevated status is required.
