Old Massett school trustee's absenteeism questioned

Is Old Massett about to lose its school trustee? That was the question at last month's school board meeting, March 23 at Queen Charlotte Secondary, when Old Massett trustee Lena Washington was absent for the third meeting in a row. When the board was asked about the repeated absence of Ms Washington, secretary-treasurer Ken Campbell answered by reading a portion of the School Act. Section 52 of the Act states that if a trustee does not attend board meetings for three consecutive months, unless it's because of illness or with the permission of the board, the position is deemed to be vacant.Ms Washington is a first-time trustee who was acclaimed to the position in late 2008. Since taking office, she has missed seven of the board's regular public meetings (out of a total of 14), including all three meetings held so far in 2010.Superintendent Angus Wilson said the board will clarify what's going on with the seat by its next meeting at the end of April. If the seat is deemed to be vacant, a by-election will have to be held.Ms Washington did not return a phone call from the Observer.
