Submitted by Peter Lantin-The community of Old Massett is very pleased and excited to invite you to participate and witness in the Grand Opening of tlaga gaw tlaas (meaning “New Town”) which is the new subdivision constructed by the Old Massett Village Council for the membership of Old Massett. The subdivision was conceptualized over a decade ago and finally came to fruition in May 2002. tlaga gaw tlaas is scheduled to accommodate 293 homes over the next 10 years, with the first 20 homes scheduled for construction this fall 2003. The goal of tlaga gaw tlaas is to accommodate the majority of Old Massett band membership who currently reside off-reserve, whether in the neighbouring municipality of Masset, or off-island in urban centers such as Prince Rupert and Vancouver.
The tlaga gaw tlaas Grand Opening is scheduled to take place on Friday, July 25. The Grand Opening ceremonies are scheduled to start at noon at the tlaga gaw tlaas site, which is situated on Highway 16, adjacent to the south of the municipality of Masset. The event will be a traditional ceremony that will be inclusive of a ceremonial march to the entrance of tlaga gaw tlaas, blessing of the grounds, a ground breaking ceremony commemorating the first house at tlaga gaw tlaas, and a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the subdivision. A list of speakers has also been confirmed which will follow traditional Haida protocol.
The Old Massett Village Council has purchased T-shirts, mugs and pens for distribution to all those who witness the tlaga gaw tlaas Grand Opening ceremonies. All merchandise has been designed to commemorate this historic event.
