Ottawa wants to hear from you about oil and gas moratorium

The federal government wants to hear from the public about whether or not it should lift the moratorium on oil and gas development on BC's coast, Natural Resources Minister Herb Dhaliwal announced Friday.
Ottawa also wants to identify science gaps relating to oil and gas development.
"This process is not a decision on whether or not to lift the moratoria, but rather a means to full explore the issues and views of British Columbians," Mr. Dhaliwal said.
The process will include science workshops, allowing governments, First Nations, communities, universities, advocacy groups and industry to identify gaps in scientific knowledge.
A report will be made public once this work is completed. A three-member panel will then carry out public and First Nations consultations, giving all interested parties the opportunity to express their views. The federal government said it would announce more details shortly.
The federal government, the provincial government and the Haida Nation all have moratoria in place over offshore oil and gas development. However, the province has said there is no scientific basis for the moratorium, and it would like to go ahead and encourage an offshore oil and gas industry.
