Outdoor program vitally important, board hears

School trustees heard last week from a group of students, teachers, and parents who described a new outdoor education program at Sk'aadgaa Naay as vitally important.Jo Hager, who runs the Mount Moresby Adventure Camp, said the pilot project was aimed at giving kids great outdoor experiences close to Skidegate, without going out overnight or far away. The students learned how to harvest crabs and fish, build shelters, climb trees, skin deer, and kayak.Teacher Sophie Peerless told the board that her grade 5/6 class loved the program, and that being outside brought out another side of many students' personalities."Its been so wonderful for their self-esteem, she said."As a teacher, I whole-heartedly support this program."Parent Michelle Prouty said the outdoor experiences have transformed her daughter's feelings about school."It levels the playing field," Ms Prouty said."I think it's life changing."School board chair Elizabeth Condrotte thanked the presenters for explaining the program, saying it was good to hear about the innovative things going on in the district. She especially thanked the three students who spoke about their experiences and what they had learned.Copyright Haida Gwaii Observer 2013
