Pole raising popular in press

The pole raising in Windy Bay last week was one of the biggest media events on Haida Gwaii in years, probably since the protests that set it off in 1985.Many islanders said they had not seen so many visitors on island for years, and the islands and the pole got a lot of press all over Canada.The National post ran a story on Saturday headlined "Justin Trudeau turns up on Haida Gwaii to help raise 13 metre pole", while earlier, The Province wrote "Hundreds expected to help raise totem pole on Haida Gwaii".Other papers and news organizations that mentioned or featured the pole raising included the Victoria Times Colonist, Vancouver Sun, CBC, the Globe and Mail, MetroNews Canada, the Ottawa Citizen the Calgary Herald as well as the Huffington Post Canada.The Huf Post wrote on Saturday that Justin Trudeau "had been spotted earlier in the week by the mayor of Queen Charlotte, Carol Kulesha, who told the ...Observer Trudeau was walking around the community ball field with his children when she stopped to chat with him, telling the paper, "He was his usual charming personality".Other papers that covered the event included the Halifax Chronicle Herald, the Brandon Sun and the Hamilton Spectator.
