Port buys white raven carving

Port Clements council has agreed to buy a $3,000 carving of a white raven from Skidegate carver Dick Bellis.
Mayor Dale Lore said he did not know anything about it until he got a phone call from Mr. Bellis telling him that the white raven carving was ready. Apparently, ex-mayor Glen Beachy ordered the statue four and a half years ago.
After confirming with Mr. Beachy that he had indeed ordered a five-foot high white raven, council voted to go through with the purchase.
The bird is carved out of yellow cedar and will be kept inside, for now, Mr. Lore said, probably in the village office.
"It wasn't in our budget but it will be a welcome addition to our village," he said.
A rare white raven lived near Port for a year and a half until it was electrocuted in 1997 after flying into a transformer.
