Port Clements loses another Golden Spruce

Port Clements councillor Kazamir Falconbridge was startled last week after going out for a walk that took him past the "Welcome to Port Clements" sign that stands just south of the village on Highway 16.The sign, he told his fellow council members Monday night (June 17), is missing an important feature. The wooden Golden Spruce - a recreation of the famous tree that stood on the banks of the Yakoun River until it was felled in 1997 - is gone."The Golden Spruce has been cut down, again," he said.Mr. Falconbridge's concerns were soon allayed by mayor Wally Cheer, who assured council that tree has not gone missing due to an act of vandalism. Instead, he said, the sign's creator has removed the tree temporarily to fix it."The plywood started to separate a bit," Mr. Cheer explained. "It won't take long. We'll get it back up shortly."
