Port interested in community forest

Port Clements is asking the Ministry of Forests to restart discussions about the possibility of a community forest for the village.
Port mayor Dale Lore sent a letter to the local Forest Service office Aug. 9, said village administrator Dana Schmidt.
"We want to talk to them," she said. "We would like to continue discussions on a community forest."
Port did discuss the concept with previous MLAs Bill Belsey and Roger Harris, but both were defeated in the May provincial election and no discussions have been held since.
Mr. Lore said Port also gave a copy of the letter to the Council of the Haida Nation.
"We haven't picked out an area yet," he said, explaining that much will depend on the CHN's plans for its own forest tenure, currently being negotiated with the province.
Last December, the provincial government invited the village of Masset to apply for a community forest.
