Postpartum doula? What's that?

submitted by Cait Blewett--A postpartum doula works with new moms and families after the birth of a baby to about three months of age. A postpartum doula 'mothers the mother,' providing support with feeding, sleeping, sibling and family adjustment and overall nurturing of the new family. A postpartum doula can connect you with other services across Haida Gwaii for help with breastfeeding, postpartum mood disorders and other unexpected circumstances after the birth of a new baby. Last week, seventeen amazing women from across Haida Gwaii participated in a four-day postpartum doula workshop jointly offered by the Skidegate Health Centre, Haida Health Centre and Haida Health Hub. The fantastic Do Steir from Douglas College facilitated the workshop, providing an open and safe space for participants to learn and share their stories.Almost all island communities were represented at the workshop. Barb Sly, Goldie Swanson, Lena Washington, Shannon Reynolds and Alicia Embree came from Masset, Old Massett and Tow Hill. Ruth Bellamy, Penny Richardson, Tiffany Scholey, Pamela Richardson, Stevie-Lynn DeGroot, Janet Rigg and Sabrina Fraser came from Port Clements and Tlell. Michelle Prouty, Bonnie Olsen, Nadine Jones, Cait Blewett and Rachel Rumak came from Skidegate and Queen Charlotte. Some participants will be using their training to supplement their existing work and some will be setting up practices across the islands, serving all communities from Tow Hill to Sandspit. Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming website and Facebook group where you will be able to find more information about postpartum doula services and contact information for women serving your community!
