Preparing for pyrotechnics

When it comes to fireworks, Masset village administrator Trevor Jarvis is the man. And right now, Mr. Jarvis is busy preparing for not one, but two sizable displays of fireworks, to be held at the north and south ends of the islands in the next two weeks. The first big night is Halloween, Oct. 31, when Masset will host an evening of pyrotechnics at the community recreation field, starting around 9 pm. Three nights later, Mr. Jarvis heads down to Queen Charlotte to oversee that community's display the night of Nov. 3.The fireworks are courtesy of the Olympic torch committee. The committee is organizing a big celebration in Queen Charlotte for Nov. 3, when the torch relay comes to the islands, but also wanted Masset to share in the fun. Masset's fireworks evening will be held a few days before the torch run because Mr. Jarvis will be overseeing both events, and he can't be in two places at once."It is a larger display than we would normally have" for Halloween, said Mr. Jarvis, the only person on the islands with a fireworks supervisor level one certificate. "The two shows will be very similar, but I am doing a couple of different things... There will be surprises."Mr. Jarvis said he ordered a good selection of cakes, candles, and mortars for the displays."I'm hoping the weather cooperates," he added. As many islanders know from experience, fireworks cannot be set off if it is too windy or too rainy. Mr. Jarvis hasn't checked the long range forecast yet, but said even if the event doesn't go off as planned, the fireworks will be saved for another evening
