Provincial reply on court administrator not reassuring

Masset has not had a court administrator since early January and the vacancy is causing some inconvenience for islanders, says Masset councillor Ed Woode. With no court administrator here, the court registry is now closed except when staff are flown over from Prince Rupert for the provincial court sessions once a month, Mr. Woode explained. The village of Masset complained to the provincial government in mid-March about the situation, but did not receive a very reassuring reply. In a letter received Monday, Rob Wood, the assistant deputy minister at the Ministry of Attorney General, wrote that the Masset operation is being reviewed "to ensure the most appropriate level of service is provided to the citizens of Haida Gwaii."Mr. Wood's letter continued that the court services branch will be in touch with the village to talk about what will be happening in the future."I commit to you that the court services branch is maintaining court registry operations in Masset, as well as continuing to hold circuit court in both Masset and Queen Charlotte City," he wrote. "The exact business model to be utilized in Masset for registry operations is yet to be determined."Councillor Woode said he was not reassured by the reply and has contacted North Coast MLA Gary Coons about why the vacant position is not being filled.
