Public meeting planned for Sandspit

By Heather Ramsay-Sandspit residents can discuss the land use plan, community forestry, land referrals in Jedway and Tasu and more at an upcoming public meeting.Area E regional district representative Evan Putterill is holding what he hopes will be the first of many open consultations with his constituents at the Sandspit community hall on Jan. 7. The meeting, which starts at 6 pm and goes until it's done, is a chance for him to provide information to the public get input on several topics.First on the agenda are the land use orders, says Mr. Putterill. He will have someone on hand to discuss the implications of the proposed land-use objectives and what they will mean for forestry on Moresby Island. The 23-page draft order, which details how logging on the islands will be carried out in the future, is now available for public review. Open houses will be held to discuss the Strategic Land Use Plan during the week of Jan. 20, he says, but the intention of this meeting is to give people an idea of the questions they may wish to ask there. Next, he wants to discuss Sandspit's strategic objectives for community forestry. The Misty Islands Economic Development Society has put together a list of draft objectives and Mr. Putterill wants public input on the document, "to see what needs to be added or taken out." He says communities need to decide what they want community forestry to do for them and he's expecting that other community leaders will be gathering similar input.Third on the agenda is discussion about referrals he has received from the Integrated Land Management Bureau for two old mine sites. One application, from a Skidegate-based company called Gil Marc Industries, requests use of crown land for the purpose of remediation of tailings left at the old mine site of Jedway. The other is from Ray Carrier of Smithers, who wants access to aggregates left at the abandoned mine site at Tasu. Mr. Carrier intends to use these aggregates in the construction industry in the north.Mr. Putterill says residents can get copies of the referrals from him and that the Moresby Island Advisory Planning Committee will be meeting the next week to give input on these proposed projects. The library is also on the agenda and Mr. Putterill said that people have expressed the desire to find a bigger space for the facility. He'd like to get input on that. Also, he's seeking advice from his constituents about whether they want him to pursue the issue of school replacement. "It's outside my jurisdiction," he said, but he'd like to know what voters want. He'll also give a report of his activities in the last quarter. Mr. Putterill said the Moresby Island Management Committee's agendas are too full to spend time on the above topics. He's hoping to hold public meetings like this every quarter.
