QC councillor to attend Enbridge meeting

Queen Charlotte councillor Kris Olsen will attend Enbridge's Joint Panel Review meeting in Kitimat August 31, council agreed Monday evening. The panel, established by Enbridge, the company behind the controversial pipeline project from Alberta to Kitimat, will assess potential environmental effects and determine if it's in the public interest, according to the company. It will accept written comments and hold three sessions, including the one in Kitimat, to collect oral comments.Mr. Olsen is well-known as an opponent of the pipeline project, as he spearheaded the on-island campaign that resulted in all municipalities and band councils speaking against it.Queen Charlotte council will also take two resolutions to the Union of BC Municipalities meeting in September. The first calls for the UBCM to oppose expansion of crude oil tanker traffic on the north coast, and the second calls for the it to oppose tar sands oil being shipped across BC in pipelines for loading onto oil tankers.Mr. Olsen's trip will be paid for by the village, but it won't be costly. He expects to spend about $300, thanks to some free accommodation he has lined up for the meeting.Copyright Haida Gwaii Observer 2010.
