QC, Skidegate cooperating on fire protection

By Alyssa King--The Village of Queen Charlotte and the Skidegate Band Council are developing a fire protocol agreement that will see the two working together when the need arises.Right now, lawyers for the two communities are drafting what Charlotte's Chief Administrative Officer Bill Beamish calls a "mutual aid agreement" or fire protocol which will allow both communities volunteer fire departments to call on each other for assistance. Not only for large fires, but in any situation where one department doesn't have enough resources, either in man-power or equipment. "Right now we do it (cooperate), but we should have something stronger" or legally binding, said Mr. Beamish. He's been working with Skidegate Band Manager Barbara Stevens and both QC Fire Chief Larry Duke and Skidegate Fire Chief John Wesley to see this through. Mr. Beamish expects something from the lawyers before mid September.
