Queen Charlotte students raise money for Haiti and run for milk

Submitted by Stephanie Hedley-Smith-On the last day of April, 17 Queen Charlotte Secondary student volunteers participated in a student-council-organized event called "Hungry for Haiti". The students were given only a small amount of juice and three hard candies for 24 hours, in return for pledges by community members to donate money to Haiti relief. When the pledged amounts had been collected, students had raised a total of $1,725 to assist with the rebuilding effort in Haiti.QCSS Student Council and the students who participated would like to thank the generous members of our communities who supported and encouraged them, and who gave them the opportunity to do their part to help the disaster victims.Milk Run/Earth day: Queen Charlotte students participated in their annual Milk Run in honour of Earth Day. Many students ran from the school to the Queen Charlotte Community Hall and were back in less than ten minutes. This was to remind students that running and walking is often quicker and definitely greener than driving. Peter Moore was the first student to return on this 3 km run. Students' names will be put in a draw to win re-usable plates and bowls to be used throughout the school year. Students have been bringing their own plates and bowls for their lunches bought here at the school. QCSS students are working hard to recycle, reuse and reduce!New sign: The Skidegate Elders gifted Queen Charlotte Secondary School with a Haida name in the spring of 2009. Ryan Stevenson has worked hard this year to create a sign with the name for above our front door. The name is engraved on a beautiful piece of local yellow cedar. Students now enter the Precious Childrens' House, Gidgalang Kuuyas Naay, and feel blessed by their elders. We are honoured and privileged to have this name to share with the historical name Queen Charlotte Secondary School.
