Radiation no threat to seaweed, test shows

Levels of Iodine 131 are at background level in water and seaweed according to testing done by Old Massett Village Council. The office has been doing water testing since a few weeks after the March 11 earthquake in Japan, which led to concerns about possible nuclear meltdown in the country. Seaweed testing started a few weeks later and the first tests have come back showing background levels on all types of radiation. Acting band manager John Disney said there seems to be no threat of contamination of seaweed, rainwater, tap water or creek water at this time. He said he still plans to monitor home grown vegetables and fish products and will make results available.
