Teachers on the islands have re-elected Evelyn von Almassy as president of their union as the school district heads into what could be a tight financial year.Ms von Almassy, who has been president of the Haida Gwaii Teachers' Association for the past two years, was acclaimed for another term at a meeting Feb. 17.The teachers' association recently changed its rules so that the president is elected for a two-year term instead of one year, so Ms von Almassy will serve until 2012."It was a very positive and busy meeting," she said. "What I've told my teachers is, I'm going to fight for each and every teacher job... Cuts need to stay away from the classroom, I'm adamant about that."Ms von Almassy said islands teachers have traditionally had a strong union, and she also appreciates the positive working relationship the union has with the school board and superintendent.
