Rec commission position likely to be filled

Skidegate resident Michelle Prouty-Williams is alarmed about rumours that the regional district may decide to eliminate the islands recreation coordinator position.
"I'm angry," Ms Prouty-Williams said Friday (Feb. 14). "We can't afford to be losing anything else."
The full-time position is funded by the Skeena-Queen Charlotte regional district. The rec coordinator is responsible for organizing recreational events all over the islands, including the slow-pitch leagues, aerobics sessions and teams going to the Northern BC Winter Games, and helps organize others, like 10-kilometre and five-kilometre runs.
The position was held for many years by Charlotte Johnson of Port Clements, who resigned in the fall.
The regional district advertised in November for a new coordinator, but has not yet hired anyone. Administrator Janet Beil said a short list of candidates has been drawn up, and the board will be making a decision about the position when it meets Feb. 21 in Prince Rupert.
"There is always a possibility that the position wouldn't be filled," Ms Beil said, but added that she does not believe this is the board's intention.
