Regional District meets Friday in Sandspit

Islanders will have the opportunity to watch the Skeena-Queen Charlotte regional district in action Friday (July 20) as directors hold their monthly meeting in Sandspit. The board usually meets in Prince Rupert, even though half of the 10 directors represent communities on Haida Gwaii, but tries to hold one meeting a year here. Friday's meeting, which starts at 1 pm at the Sandspit community hall, has a full and fascinating agenda. Interim administrator Tanalee Hesse said the board will hear from at least four delegations: Husby Forest Products Ltd. president Bob Brash on the land use agreement, the Coastal Community Network, and the Tow Hill Road Advisory Committee. It will also be the first meeting for new administrator John Holland, who just moved into his new office this week. Mr. Holland comes to the regional district from Stewart, where he was the chief administrative officer for many years. The meeting is being held in the afternoon because directors want to attend the Haida feast in Skidegate that evening, Ms Hesse said. At their last meeting, directors voted to support an application from the Qay'llnagaay Heritage Centre to the Northern Trust for a $500,000 loan, so they are especially interested in touring the heritage centre and joining in the Skidegate Days celebration, Ms Hesse said. The regional district covers the transportation and accommodation cost for directors to attend meetings. It won't cost the regional district anything extra to have directors attend the Friday night feast because the earliest they could fly back to Prince Rupert in any case would be Saturday, Ms Hesse said.
