Rennell Sound road open after slide

Heavy rain caused a big landslide that completely blocked the Rennell Sound Road for two days this week.
The slide occurred at the top of the Rennell Sound hill, about 26 km from Queen Charlotte, on Wednesday.
Ministry of Forests workers removed 70 dump truck loads (150 cubic metres total) of rocks, mud and debris to clear the road, said Brian Eccles, Acting Operations Manager for MoF.
By Friday, the road was clear enough for traffic to pass with some delays, said Mr. Eccles.
Logging trucks are not hauling on the road at this time, but road construction is going on in the area, said Mr. Eccles.
The road is passable now, but will be better when the ministry replaces a culvert and possibly does some ditching, as weather allows.
