Saints team number retired

All-Native Basketball hall-of-famer Garner Moody was given the highest honour when his Skidegate Saints team number 5 was retired on Saturday night.Eddie Russ of the Skidegate Band Council made the surprise announcement after the final game at the Skidegate Clan tournament on Jan. 9."We hope it's the start of a tradition," he said, meaning the Band Council hopes to recognize more basketball players in Skidegate. Mr. Moody's influence has been felt for over three decades, whether he's been playing, coaching or refereeing, said Mr. Russ.Percy Williams also spoke of Mr. Moody's contribution to an emotional audience that night and played "When the Saints Go Marching In" on his harmonica.Before last year's All-Native Tournament, Mr. Moody told the Observer that men like George Brown (for whom the Skidegate recreation centre is now named), Pete Martin and Percy Williams, deserved credit for taking an interest in showing the boys in the village how to play and keeping them playing.After Saturday night, Mr. Moody's team number, 5, should never be used by another Skidegate Saints player. Mr. Russ said they have plans to hang a banner the hall with Mr. Moody's name and number on it.
