Sandspit to get new water system

The provincial and federal governments have turned on the money faucet and are letting $1.9-million flow into Sandspit so the community can build a new water supply and distribution system.
Federal and provincial officials announced the infrastructure grant at last week's Union of BC Municipalities conference in Vancouver, said regional district administrator Janet Beil.
Sandspit residents currently use private wells for water. The new system will improve drinking water quality and fire protection for 230 residents.
Ms Beil said the community first applied for the infrastructure grant three years ago, so the announcement was especially welcome.
The total project cost is expected to be around $2.9-million. Ms Beil said the community is hoping to use Gwaii Trust money to cover the remainder. If this doesn't work out, local taxpayers will be asked to contribute.
