School board considers name change

The school board is considering changing its name, after Masset trustee Sharon Matthews raised the matter at the board meeting held Tuesday evening in Port Clements.
Ms Matthews noted that the legal name of the school district at the moment is 'School District #50 (Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte), and suggested that those living in Masset think of Queen Charlotte City when they hear Queen Charlotte. She suggested changing the name to Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands.
"We could leave it (as it is) and know that it is a mistake", Ms Matthews said, "or we can correct it."
Port trustee Maggie Bell Brown said she like the idea of changing the name, but is concerned that it might be costly. "I like having the name accurately reflect what the district is," she said.
Skidegate's new trustee Wayne Wilson said he too would like to consider the idea. "Let's see what it will cost, and refer it to another meeting," he said.
School board officials will look into what it would take to make the change and report back to the board in January.
