School District expects $9.8 million budget this year

The islands school district expects to receive around $78,000 more from the Ministry of Education next year than it did this year, secretary-treasurer Ken Campbell told trustees at their March 23 board meeting, held at Queen Charlotte Secondary. The district received just over $9.7-million for the 2009-10 school year, and is estimating that it will receive almost $9.8-million for 2010-11, as long as enrollment doesn't drop by more than about five students, Mr. Campbell said.He also told trustees that the provincial government is unfreezing school facility grants, which means the district will probably be able to demolish the old Port Clements elementary school in the coming year. The project had to be put on hold last year after the provincial government cancelled the facilities funding.Mr. Campbell will be presenting more information about the 2010-11 budget at public meetings scheduled for Wednesday March 30 in and Port Clements, and April 14 in Sandspit and April 15 in Queen Charlotte.
