School enrollment down slightly

There are fewer students in islands classrooms this year than there were last year, but the loss is not as great as the district had been expecting, according to the latest enrollment figures. As of Sept. 30, the Haida Gwaii school district had a total of just over 675 full-time equivalent students attending school, a loss of six students from the 681 full-time equivalents who attended school in 2008-2009.However, the district had projected that only about 662 students would be in islands classrooms this fall, meaning there are about 13 more students than administrators had expected. The number of regular, school-age students this year is actually up by one, with the overall enrollment drop entirely due to less adult students signing up for classes. The equivalent of 14 full-time adult students had signed up for courses by Sept. 30, compared to 21 last year.Enrollment fluctuated between the district's six schools, with Sk'aadgaa Naay elementary up by 15.5 students and G.M. Dawson up by almost four. The other schools all saw declines: Port Clements elementary and Queen Charlotte Secondary are down by just over two students, Tahayghen lost 5.5 students and A.L. Mathers in Sandspit is down by almost 15. (Student numbers are not whole numbers because some students, kindergarteners for example, are counted as a fraction of a full-time student.)The largest graded class in the district this year is grade 8. There are 64 grade 8s on the islands, 33 at G.M. Dawson (where they easily outnumber all other grades), 24 at Queen Charlotte, and seven at A.L. Mathers. The smallest graded class is grade 3, with only 36 students - 17 at Sk'aadgaa Naay, 14 at Tahayghen, three at Port and two at A.L.M.Enrollment by school:.G.M. Dawson Secondary has 110 regular students and 1.75 adult students this year, compared to a total of 108 students last year..Queen Charlotte Secondary has 144.625 regular students and 5.125 adult students this year, for a total of 149.75, compared to a total of 152.125 last year..A.L.
