The school district is searching for a new secretary-treasurer, after Andrea deBucy announced she will be leaving the islands at the end of August.
Ms deBucy has accepted a new position as secretary-treasurer of the Sunshine Coast school district in Gibsons. The move will bring her closer to her husband, who has been working in Nanaimo for the past year and a half, she said.
The Sunshine Coast district is larger than Haida Gwaii, with about 3,700 students compared to 750 here, and an annual budget of $34-million, more than triple this district's $10-million budget.
"It's a gorgeous school district," she said. "It reminds me of the Queen Charlotte Islands."
Ms deBucy has had a long career in public service on the islands. She moved here in 1979, intending to stay for two years, but that stretched into 27 years. She worked first as the accountant for the hospital in Queen Charlotte, then served 13 years as the islands Government Agent. She's been secretary-treasurer for the school district for the past three years.
The school district is now advertising for a new secretary-treasurer, with a deadline for applications of June 30. Details are available at www.sd50.bc.ca
