Shoot-a-thon Friday

The Haida Gwaii under-14 boys' basketball team is inviting everyone to come out to Skidegate's George Brown Rec Centre Friday night to watch them take 3,000 shots at the net.The shoot-a-thon is a fundraiser for the team, which is trying to raise enough money to get to Vancouver to compete at the BC under-14 provincial championships later this month. Team manager Dave Wahl said the players are asking people to sponsor them to shoot 3,000 shots. Donors will have their names entered in a draw for the gold watch given to the Skidegate Senior Saints for capturing the top spot at this year's All-Native Basketball Tournament. Mr. Wahl, who coaches the Senior Saints, said the team really wants to support the younger players and help them out any way they can. Saints players Desi Collinson and Duane Alsop are coaching the under-14 team and have been working intensively with the players - who come from all over Haida Gwaii - since the team got together last month."It is really fun for us to see the young players develop - it reminds me of a very exciting time in my life," Mr. Wahl said. "This is also why Desi and Duane are coaching the team."If anyone is concerned that 3,000 basketball shots is a lot of work, Mr. Wahl says NBA superstar Kobe Bryant makes between 2,000 and 3,000 shots every day.The shoot-a-thon takes place this Friday, May 10, at the rec centre from 6 pm until 11 pm. There will be free coffee and popcorn for spectators, so stop in and watch the action.
