Sierra Club annual meeting next Monday

Submitted by the Sierra Club-The Sierra Club Haida Gwaii Group will hold its annual general meeting Monday October 20, 7:30pm at Cacilia's B&B, Tlell. We will review this year's many accomplishments and there will be a presentation on wind power production. (The ad in last week's Observer mentioned a Gwaii Haanas slide show - it will be a presentation on wind power.)
This year, we organized a garbage cleanup which collected 80 bags of trash from Hadyn Turner Campground to Miller Creek. There was also a presentation on offshore oil and gas, and Elizabeth May, Sierra Club Canada president, spoke as well. Sierra Club chair Jacques Morin presented information about energy usage at the all-island colloquium held in the spring.
A major highlight this year was the very successful summer hiking series which brought together locals and tourists to explore some lesser known hiking trails in places of unique natural beauty. The series of five hikes was organized in collaboration with Sarah Loewen of the QCI Rec Committee.
Indeed, collaboration was a major theme for the Sierra Club. As co-organizers and participants in these events, the club cooperated with many conservation-oriented groups, including Friends of the Yakoun, Friends of the Dover Trail, Tlell Watershed Society, Teen Centre the Visitor Information Centres, and Roots and Shoots, to name a few.
Members and non members are all welcome at this year's agm. If you would like to find out what the Sierra Club is all about and what things are in store for the following year, perhaps we will see you there!
