Tow Hill Road opposed to pipeline project

Tow Hill Road has added its voice to the islands communities speaking out against Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline project. At a meeting May 17, the Tow Hill Road advisory standing committee adopted a resolution formally opposing the project, said committee member Chris Ashurst. The pipeline would carry tar sands oil from Alberta to Kitimat, where it would be loaded onto supertankers heading out into Douglas Channel and Hecate Strait on their way to China. The resolution gives several reasons for the committee's opposition, including the hazards that oil transportation presents to the islands, the tar sands contribution to climate change and pollution and their negative effect on human and animal health, and islanders' interest in developing a sustainable economy based on healthy communities, marine and terrestial ecosystems.
