Travel funds available

Islanders will be able to take a few more trips with Gwaii Trust funding this year, after the society approved a top-up to the travel assistance fund. Managing administrator Errol Winter said the board voted on the weekend to add $20,000 to the fund, which had run dry only half-way through the Gwaii Trust’s financial year. The travel fund started off the 2009-2010 year with $85,000, but islanders had used that amount by late March. Mr. Winter said the Gwaii Trust has several travel fund applications still pending, and he expects that much of the additional $20,000 will go to these, leaving little room for fresh applications. The travel fund program helps islanders with the cost of travel for sports, cultural, educational and recreational events.
