An earthquake near Japan early Wednesday morning caused a Tsunami watch along the BC coast, including the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii.
The earthquake was recorded at 3:14 am, and a Tsunami warning issued for Alaska, with a Tsunami watch for the coast between Alaska and Washington.
Officials watched the situation closely and RCMP on the Queen Charlottes were on duty by 5:30 am. The Tsunami watch was cancelled just before 7:00 am. Earlier, it was thought possible a wave would arrive at Langara Island just before 10 am and at Tofino on Vancouver Island shortly after 11 am.
The 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Japan caused a tsunami less than a metre high in northern Japan.
Tsunamis are a series of waves which could be dangerous for several hours after the arrival of a first wave.
